The Context: Hyder Ali’s Siege

In 1779, Chitradurga Fort found itself under the looming threat of Hyder Ali’s forces. This was not the first attempt; Hyder Ali had tried twice before to capture the fort but was thwarted by Ontisalaga Madakari Nayaka, the then Raja of Chitradurga. During the third attack, Hyder Ali’s soldiers discovered a narrow secret passage that led into the fort. This passage, so confined that only one soldier could enter at a time, seemed like a perfect entry point to surprise the defenders and secure victory.

The Unexpected Defender: Onake Obavva

Onake Obavva, the wife of Kahale Mudda Hanuma, a guard stationed at a watchtower, was engaged in her daily chores when she noticed Hyder Ali’s soldiers attempting to infiltrate through the passage. Armed with nothing but an onake, a traditional pestle used for grinding grain, Obavva positioned herself by the passage.

As each soldier emerged, she struck them down with her pestle, a formidable weapon in her hands. Soldier after soldier fell, and within a few hours, the bodies of the enemy began to pile up around her. Obavva’s unrelenting assault single-handedly halted the advance of Hyder Ali’s forces for several hours. Her act of bravery is a powerful reminder of the strength and resolve that can emerge in times of dire need.

The Power of Shakti and Patriotism

Onake Obavva’s feat is not just a tale of physical strength but a profound demonstration of her love for her homeland and the power of Shakti, the divine feminine energy. Despite having no formal training in combat, her courage and quick thinking turned a simple household tool into a formidable weapon of defense. Her actions embody the spirit of resistance and the undying will to protect one’s motherland, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

The Aftermath and Legacy

Although Onake Obavva eventually succumbed to the relentless waves of soldiers, her bravery gave the defenders of Chitradurga Fort precious time to regroup and counter the attack. Her story has been immortalized in local folklore and historical accounts, inspiring generations to value courage, sacrifice, and the fierce determination to protect one’s heritage.

Recognition in Literature

The valor of Onake Obavva has been documented in various historical texts and literature. Chapter 42 in Book 2 of “#SaffronSwords” by Manoshi Sinha provides a detailed account of her heroic deeds, alongside 51 other episodes of valor from the 8th century to India’s independence. This collection highlights the contributions of warriors who shaped the course of Indian history with their courage and dedication.
