Relief is finally on the horizon for the rain-deficient regions of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The upcoming two to three days are expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, addressing the significant precipitation shortfall experienced between June 1 and 7.

Coastal Karnataka has seen a 60% deficit, Konkan and Goa a 64% deficit, Madhya Maharashtra a 15% deficit, and Marathwada a 12% deficit. Vidarbha stands as the only region with a surplus (2%).

A weak monsoon surge over Karnataka and South Maharashtra has now strengthened, attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the south coast of Maharashtra and the adjoining north coast of Karnataka. This system, extending up to 4.5 kilometers above mean sea level, is poised to intensify rainfall activity significantly.

Districts on high alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall include Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigarh, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune, and Solapur in Maharashtra, as well as Belgaum, Karwar, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, and Shimoga in Karnataka. The expected rainfall may lead to localized flooding and waterlogging.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, the monsoon is expected to advance inland, bringing much-needed rain to coastal Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Mumbai and Pune are also likely to see rain soon, improving the overall rain deficit across Maharashtra and Karnataka.

This rainfall will be beneficial for water reservoir levels, which have been depleted due to the previous deficit, thus aiding in the region’s water security.
